For two years, SEO teams have argued about AI Overviews with almost no first-party evidence. A traffic dip appeared, one person blamed AI, another blamed a core update, and nobody could prove either theory.

That has partly changed. Google announced dedicated Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console on June 3, 2026, and says they reached all websites worldwide on August 31, 2026. The reports show how often your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. They do not show how many people clicked.

The second is a Search Console control that lets a site choose whether its links and content appear in, and help ground, those features.

Google also published a guide to optimizing for generative AI features. It matters as much as the data does, because it tells you what Google itself says works.

The scale explains why Google built all this. By Google’s own figures, AI Overviews has more than 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode has passed one billion monthly users. If a share of your audience meets your brand inside those answers first, you need a way to see it.

What each report covers

The Search report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Google says it expects to update that list over time. A separate report for Discover covers generative AI features there. In the Search version you can group data by page, country, date and device. Impressions mean the number of times links to your site were shown to a user inside a generative AI feature; Google explains the counting rules in its article on how impressions are counted.

Two details are easy to miss. Data from Search Labs experiments is excluded, and sites without enough AI impressions may not see the report at all, as the Search Console help page explains.

Google’s documentation describes impressions only, and Search Engine Journal’s coverage of the worldwide rollout confirms there is no click data yet. Third-party analysis of the report makes the same point about click-through rate and position.

The AI numbers are a slice of your existing impressions

This is the most common reporting mistake. Google says the generative AI report includes data from the Web search type in the standard Performance report, and its announcement notes that the same data stays in the overall performance report. In other words, the new report separates out impressions you were already receiving. It does not create new ones.

A simple illustration: if your Web search impressions were 250,000 last month and the AI report shows 40,000, your total is still 250,000. Roughly 16% of that exposure happened inside AI features. Adding the two figures would invent 40,000 impressions that never existed, and the error grows as AI features take a larger share.

Why totals may not match

Aggregation differs by view. In the chart, two links from your site inside one AI response count as a single property-level impression, while the page table counts each page on its own. Google says chart and table totals can differ for that reason. The usual Performance report limits apply too, including the 1,000-row cap and Pacific Time dates, and the newest data can be preliminary.

Why Impressions Without Clicks Still Change Your Strategy

A fair objection: impressions alone do not pay invoices. Search Engine Journal is right that the reports don’t show how many clicks an appearance generates. Even so, impressions answer questions you could not answer before.

  • Which pages does Google retrieve? Google’s guide explains that its AI features use retrieval-augmented generation, pulling relevant pages from the Search index before composing a response. Page-level data shows what got pulled.
  • Which sub-questions do you match? Google also uses query fan-out, running several related searches behind a single prompt. Imagine someone asking for the best CRM for a small law firm. Hidden searches might cover client intake forms, per-user pricing and data security. If your pricing page surfaces, the report shows it, even though you never optimised for that prompt.
  • How big is the exposure? Without a baseline, an opt-out decision or a forecast is guesswork.
  • Where should you watch for click changes? Pages with rising AI impressions become a watch list inside the regular Performance report.

Think of the report as a map, not a scoreboard. It tells you where to look. It does not tell you what you earned.

How to Read the Report: A Six-Step Workflow

Step 1: Confirm access and eligibility

Open the Generative AI performance report in Search Console. If it is missing, Google’s help page lists three likely causes: your property has not received the rollout yet, your site has not had enough AI impressions, or you have excluded the site through the new control.

Group by countries, then by devices. Businesses selling in several markets should look for uneven exposure. A page might surface often for searchers in one country and rarely in another, which can point to a localisation or intent gap. Device splits show where your audience meets AI answers, which should inform page design and mobile experience. Look for gaps first and avoid assuming a cause.

Step 5: Compare against classic performance data

Filter the standard Performance report to the same pages. If a page’s AI impressions climb while its click-through rate slips, you have a hypothesis: some searchers may be getting what they need from the answer. It is a hypothesis, not proof, because seasonality, ranking changes and layout shifts can produce the same pattern. Nothing in the new data changes the basics: pages must be crawlable, indexable and snippet-eligible. Should You Use the New Opt-Out Control?

The Search generative AI control lives in Search Console settings and works at property level.
